Low Seating
Interior designers often employ optical illusions to make a space look bigger than it is. One way of doing this is by increasing the visual height of the room. When choosing furniture for your dining room design, choose chairs with low backs. This creates a visual break in the room and makes the ceiling feel higher than if your dining table were surrounded by tall back chairs.
Do Away With Arms
Benches, as dining table seating has seen a surge in popularity ratings in the past year. Benches are also the perfect example of low furniture. A long bench at a 6 seater table can often fit more than two people on. This negates the need to pull up an extra chair as would have been the case if your dining table featured chairs as the seating plan. Benches also make the room look less cluttered.
Mirrors

When considering materials for table tops in small dining rooms think transparency. A dining table is usually the largest piece of furniture in a dining room. Using a transparent material like glass will ensure that it doesn’t dominate the room and create an illusion of space. Camouflaging furniture pieces to blend in with wall colours is another way to achieve the same effect. Instead of a dark walnut polish for your wall shelves and chairs consider painting them the same colour as the walls.
Light Colours
Colour is a very important tool when designing small spaces. Pick a light colour palette for your compact dining room to make it seem airier. Pantone’s colour of the year 2016, rose quartz and serenity are ideal hues to star as the primary shade of your dining room colour palette.
Think Big
Curios are more than just interesting pieces they often have stories attached to them that make them special. Thus, it would be extremely difficult to decorate a space without artwork and curios. For small rooms, think big when it comes to wall art and curios. A singular large canvas is a much better way to make a statement in small dining rooms than a cluster of smaller pieces. Similarly, if you must have something on your dining table, choose a single large piece rather than a tray filled with knick knacks.
Go Tall
In order to make a room feel larger than it is designers often try to draw attention towards he ceiling. Draping curtains high above the actual window, closer to the ceiling makes the walls seem taller and widens your view of the room. When picking curtaining fabric stay away from intricate prints and choose solid colours or large self patterns.
