The term, ‘feature wall’ is commonly heard when talking of interior design plans especially for living room designs. A feature wall can be narrow or wide depending on your interior. The most common treatment to define a feature wall is to paint it a different colour from the other walls. Apart from painting a wall a solid colour, a feature wall can also be highlighted with paint by using it to create patterns on the wall. Still, paint isn’t the only way. Here are 9 other ways to design a feature wall in your home.
Photographs and Memories
Photographs are the most personal way to design a feature wall. You could either choose to enlarge a single frame and let it dominate your wall or create a collage of prints to cover the expanse. Ideally a large scale print of a photograph should be used only in large rooms so that it doesn’t overshadow the rest of the room. Photographs can be used to create feature walls in living rooms, dining rooms, dens and even bedrooms but it might be a little creepy to have such a wall in the bathroom.
Wallpaper
Wallpaper is the second most common choice when it comes to feature walls. When selecting a wallpaper for a feature wall, keep the overall theme of the room in mind and ensure that the wallpaper follows the same design language. You could even choose wallpapers with 3D elements such as Swarovski crystals to add an element of luxurious living to your home.
Stone
Apart from being used as flooring, stone and marble slabs can also be used to design feature walls. A stone feature wall can add warmth and natural beauty to a room. To add texture to a room, you could also consider rock panels on your feature wall. A stone wall is also ideal for homes fashioned as Mediterranean villas or Spanish courtyards.
Wood
Wood or wood paneling can be used in a number of ways to create a feature wall. The effect achieved is warm and can vary from being rustic to luxurious depending on the way it is treated. Feature walls can also be used to create visual illusions. Installing wood panels horizontally can make a narrow wall seem wider and installing them vertically can make a room look taller than it is. For rooms designed in a contemporary style you could also choose to create a feature wall by cladding a wall with veneer.
Exposed Brick
Exposed brick walls are often considered a favourite with restaurant designers in India. A brick wall gives a room an element of warmth and ethnicity while making it feel welcoming and natural. For modern and contemporary spaces, an exposed brick wall can even be painted so as to maintain the texture while adding character to the room. An exposed brick wall may be left as is or whitewashed to suit living rooms, kitchen designs and even outdoor patios. Exposed bricks can also be used to ornament columns to make them an accent feature in a room.
Murals
A wall mural can be made in a number of different ways. Mural feature walls can be both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional. Most children’s room designs feature murals as focus walls. A mural is also an ideal way to highlight feature walls in passages and foyers.
Tufted Wall
Sofas aren’t the only thing in your house that can be luxuriously tufted. A tufted wall speaks of sophistication, elegance and ofcourse luxury. A tufted feature wall an also serve as a headboard in a bedroom. The downside to tufted walls is that they are expensive both to create as well as maintain. Tufted feature walls are best suited to bedrooms.
Functional Features
A feature wall can serve an aesthetic as well as functional role in your home décor. A floor to ceiling library is a great way of focusing on one wall in dens or study rooms. Installing shelving that goes up from the floor all the way to the ceiling can set the wall apart and can also be used to display hobby collections, planters etc.
Chalkboard
Defining a feature wall with chalkboard can be considered a variation of painting the wall. The difference however is that painting the wall is only the first step of having a chalkboard feature wall. Express your creativity with quotes, doodles etc on a chalkboard wall to add energy to your home décor. A chalkboard feature wall is most suited to kitchens and children’s rooms but won’t be out of place in living rooms as well.
Whatever you choose, the most important part of designing a feature wall is to be selective and feature minimal walls in a house.
